George "Bugs" Moran
Bugs Moran was born with the name Adelard Cunin on August 22, 1891 in St. Paul Minnesota. He lived there with his parents until he was age 19 and moved to Chicago and joined up with some gangs. By the time he was 21 he had already been in jail three times. He then became the head of the famous bootlegging group that became known as the North Side Gang.
While heading that gang he encountered many problems with Torrio, Capone and their gang. Both of the gangs were in the bootlegging business and they had trouble finding neutral ground. While Torrio was head of the gang he was able to work out an agreement with Moran and another gangster, Charles O'Bannion. That agreement did not last very long though. Both Moran and O'Bannion detested Capone and regularly taunted him by calling him "Scarface", a name which he hated. O'Bannion eventually paid the price of his fun with his life. He was murdered by Capone's and Torrio's gun men. Later at the funeral Moran was in attendance as well as Capone and Torrio. This is when Moran vowed to avenge his friend's death.
After the funeral there were many attempts to take Capone's life though he always walked away unharmed. Moran had more luck with his attempts on Torrio's life. His gunmen ended up shooting him and that made him retire and give up his position to Capone. Moran and Capone then made an agreement where they would not use guns or have any gun battles. They stayed true to this except they did other things to get at the other's nerves. Moran would hijack Capone's bootlegging trucks and then sell his liquor for a profit. To retaliate Capone would burn down buildings that housed Moran's businesses. This all ended in Moran killing two of Capone's close friends and then Capone got his revenge with the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Unlike Capone, Moran was never arrested close to the repeal of prohibition. He also did not have people who were trying to get him in jail. Eventually in 1946 he was arrested in Ohio for robbing a bank. After being released from jail in 1956 be was soon again arrested for robbing another bank. He later died in jail in 1957 from lung cancer.
